Back to school (but for adults) - Episode 67
Even if you’re not heading back to the classroom this fall, there’s something about the “back to school” energy that feels refreshing.
New goals, new routines, and maybe even a few upgrades can bring a little extra motivation into adult life.
In this week’s episode of the podcast, I’m breaking down how to capture that feeling and use it to your advantage.
Create & consume:
What Austen is creating this week: brand partnership pitch decks in Canva
What Austen is consuming this week: I read Bad Summer People and finished it a while ago but I forgot to tell you guys about it and I haven’t finished anything since finishing that (been in a bit of a reading rut) but loved this rich person’s multi-POV mystery
In this episode:
Why being a lifelong learner is important
That back to school energy isn’t just for kids—it’s about keeping your perspective fresh and staying curious.
Sometimes, a totally random moment can spark that curiosity.
For example, Andrew and I watched one episode of the new Hard Knocks season featuring the Bills, and I learned they’re one of only five NFL teams that actually go away for two weeks of training camp.
Or maybe it’s something you never studied in school but keep coming back to (for me, that’s reality TV).
Being open to growth—whether that’s learning new skills or consuming content intentionally—can help you adapt in your career, personal goals, and daily life.
Upgrade your supplies
One of the best parts of a new school year was always shopping for supplies. (Staples definitely hated to see me coming.)
Now, as adults, we can channel that same energy into life upgrades:
Crusty AirPods? Maybe it’s time for a new pair.
Socks with holes? Add fresh ones to your drawer.
Cute pens, planners, or desk accessories that make you actually want to sit down and work.
It doesn’t have to be expensive—you can set a budget and turn it into a little challenge.
I even have a desk tour video on YouTube where I share everything I keep on mine.
Back to school outfits
Nothing beat picking out that first day of school outfit. Why not bring the same vibe into adult life? You can:
Use your “first day” look for a social media shoot, work headshots, or even a date.
Do a mini fall refresh with pieces you actually love—like an extra pair of your go-to jeans, simple tops for layering, and sneakers to replace the pair you’ve worn to the ground.
Play with fall fabrics like leather, suede, velvet, and knits.
You could even get a color analysis if you want a little guidance before shopping.
Create a new routine
Back to school is a perfect reset point.
Even if you’re not commuting, you can simulate one by grabbing coffee or going for a quick walk before starting your workday.
Other ideas:
Plan your lunches ahead of time (bonus points if you upgrade your containers).
Block off time for hobbies and social plans—since there’s no bell system in adulthood, you have to create your own schedule.
Use tools like a Notion planner or goal setting template to stay on track.
Learn and consume intentionally
This is also a great time to check in with your habits.
Set time limits to keep yourself from doomscrolling.
Follow creators who inspire you, like Julia Broome and Jules Acree.
Mute or unsubscribe from accounts that cause stress.
Explore actual classes—Skillshare, Masterclass, or even YouTube.
I even have some digital courses and resources if you’re looking to learn something creative.
It doesn’t have to be work-related—apps like Duolingo make it easy to pick up a new language.
Just make the process fun: light a candle, pour your favorite drink, and make it a moment.
Socializing and extracurriculars
Clubs and extracurriculars don’t stop after graduation—you just have to find them.
Join a local organization or volunteer group (something fun like NYFW or meaningful like PanCAN).
If you’re in Hoboken, there are Hive Athletic intramural teams, and there are tons of online communities as well.
The key is balancing it—take care of yourself first, and socializing will feel more rewarding.
Back to school shows, movies, and books
Finally, set the mood with some classics and fresh picks:
TV shows: Gossip Girl (seasons 1–2), Gilmore Girls
Movies: She’s the Man, Legally Blonde
Books on my TBR: The Ministry of Time (moody, sci-fi vibes) and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow (friends who met at Harvard and build a video game together)
Summary
Even if you’re not starting a new semester, you can still capture that “fresh start” energy this fall.
Whether it’s upgrading your daily essentials, refreshing your wardrobe, trying a new routine, or learning something new, these small changes can help you feel more motivated and fulfilled.
Back to school season isn’t just for kids—it’s for anyone who wants to keep growing.
